Mexico City is a very large city. During a recent trip I was on my own to find transportation from the east side of the city to the west. A cab would only cost $25.00. However I was on a much tighter budget. I choose to ride the Metro (subway). It’s one of the largest subway system on earth.
I found it very easy to use and was able to read the map’s and legends with ease with the language being in spanish.
The airport station is within walking distance to the airport. I just happen to be riding the subway during rush hour. The only negative to the ride was the amount of people that were on the train at one time. If you remember some of those shows where people get pushed / crammed into the train… Well this would be a very good example.
I had one transfer and knew my route before I even got on the train. each train has a map of the stops and out in the station in big bold letters were the station names. Once I arrived at my transfer station, the change of trains were very easy. Like most subways you need to make sure you get on the “correct side of the track” or you’ll be going to wrong way. some transfers require some walking, which mine did.
The transfer went smooth and i was on my second and last train. I would be riding the train for about 30 minutes to my destination.. Once i was one station before mine, I made my way from my seat to near the door. It was like trying to squeeze through a mob. But I made it and easily departed the train and then the station.
I had called and gotten 100MB of data for my iPhone before i departed the USA. This came in handy while trying to figure out where I was and were I was to go.
Overall the ride was great and cheap. I think i spent around $3.00 for the ride.
ADDITIONAL ITEMS;
Now when I travel to foreign countries I’m quite intimidated about getting lost or mugged or whatever. I think what intimidates me the most is the lack of understanding due to the language barrier. I’ll admit. I was scared.
This brings me to a topic I won’t really get too deep into but it has to do with safety and common sense. Picture me for a moment; I’m white, dressed more like an American (yes us Americans have a distinguished look, and most foreigners can tell). I’m carrying a back pack and I’m toting a carryon luggage.. Yes I look like a foreigner.
This is what I do. I always keep my passport on me in my front pocket at all times. When arriving or leaving I try and wear a long shirt. I keep my wallet and my phone in my front pockets also. I only put in my back jean pockets that what I don’t mind loosing… I always carry cash of that country in one of my front pockets. Enough for a cab to where I need to go.. I never wear headphones when I’m venturing through the subways etc. I always keep an eye out for strange suspicious people just hanging out and watching you… I’m a very alert person and tend to not trust people that easily. I note where security are. I keep my belongings close with my hands on them, observe what the locals are doing and try and blend in…
