Because our flight was 3.5 hour delayed and my good friend Robert, who spent a while on the phone complaining, I received a $50.00 gift certificate from Delta towards future flights.
So off to the internet I went looking for a place to travel too. I continued to come up with great fares from American Airlines to Mexico City. Just a couple problems…
First is the lack of miles for the cost. The ticket was $395 (and I was not able to apply my Delta voucher to this ticket). The amount of miles totals 5190. To me this was not a good value.
The second issue is the fact American is in Bankruptcy and there is a pending sale. Granted there probably wont be anything happening in the next 45 days but it just simply does not make me feel comfortable. Will AS accept their miles? Will they be around? will there be a strike affecting operations?
The last issue was, when I went to book the ticket and select my seats, AA continued to charge me for the “preferred seats”. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with them trying to resolve the issue, which never got resolved. They eventually issued me a “courtesy voucher” to remove the cost incurred.
Many of these issues were concerning enough to me to look elsewhere.
So I went to Delta and started poking around. I found the following routing and cost;
SEA-DTW-MEX-ATL-SEA for $416 minus my $50.00 voucher equaling $364.00. Total miles; 7259
.050 per mile verse .076 per mile. Definite difference bringing my Mileage goal closer into play. Searching around for better fares and more miles has it’s perks. Now only if i receive the good ole “hey we changed our flights so call us for a route change” letter!
